One of its leaders, who received the award from Vice President Yolanda Díaz, is Ángel Gil Orrios, an artist from Cariñón who spent a good part of his childhood in Ejea de los Caballeros and whom, since 2000, has been the artistic-executive director of the Thalia Spanish Theatre in New York City. Dejó el Seminario por el teatro y su padre, que lo veía de cura, le echó de casa. “Los inicios fueron duros, pero sabía lo que quería”, afirma. Y tanto. Hoy, Ángel Gil Orrios no solo sigue viviendo del teatro, sino que ha conseguido ser el único director español en Nueva York. Ya es suficiente galardón, pero ha logrado más. El último, el Premio de Arte y Cultura 2009 de la ciudad. He left the Seminary for the theater and his father, who wanted him to be priest, threw him out of the house. “The beginning was hard, but I knew what I wanted,” he says. And he wanted it a lot. Today, Angel Gil Orrios not only continues to live from the theater, but has managed to be the only Spanish director in New York. That in itself is an award; yet his accomplishments go way beyond that. The latest, the city’s 2009 Art and Culture Award. Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented it to him for his work heading the Thalía Theater, the only bilingual theater in the metropolis, which programs pieces by Spanish and Latino authors.
