Bliss Theater as the new home for Thalia Spanish Theatre!
The historic BLISS THEATRE on Greenpoint Avenue at 45th St., in the Sunnyside-Woodside area of Queens, NYC, opened in 1930, and is a cultural landmark that has been a key part of our community’s fabric, first as a luxurious movie theater, and then beautifully preserved as a church.
The Bliss Theater is currently under threat of loss and may be sold and razed for another use. In a breathtaking opportunity for local arts, we believe it should be preserved and given a new lease on life as the home of the established THALIA SPANISH THEATRE, providing excellence for 47 years. The Thalia has been an integral part of our community since 1977, providing high-quality performances and promoting Latin culture (NYC Department of Cultural Affairs).
Thalia has produced internationally-recognized events in a virtual shoebox, and this 4-block move up Greenpoint Avenue would provide them more space for their own productions and also other local cultural groups. There would be no need to set up a new untested 501-c-3, as the Thalia has proved its worth, dedication, excellence and service to the public in 47 years. They have presented 253 performing arts productions and garnered over 250 local, national and international Awards for artistic excellence. They have already been proven trustworthy with local, state, and national grants and private foundations.
By moving into the BLISS THEATRE, with its amazing space, they could continue their valuable work, while committing to preserve an important piece of our local history. They already offer bi-lingual (English & Spanish) productions, preserve the classics and waning folklore, dance, poetry, music, cutting edge plays, free outdoor events for children, film festivals, and professional level instruction. It is time we give more than lip service to Spanish-speakers of 21 countries who live here and contribute to the arts and the economy.
This move would not only benefit arts and culture but also boost local economy by attracting more visitors to Queens (Americans for the Arts). We urge you to support this initiative that combines architectural preservation with cultural enrichment. Guests often come from all over the tri-state area and both airports to Thalia shows, and dine locally. Thalia is the only bilingual Hispanic/Latinx theater in Queens, NYC!

El histórico BLISS THEATRE en Greenpoint Avenue en 45th St., en el área Sunnyside-Woodside de Queens, Nueva York, abrió sus puertas en 1930 y es un hito cultural que ha sido una parte clave del tejido de nuestra comunidad, primero como una sala de cine de lujo, y luego bellamente conservada como iglesia.
El BLISS THEATRE se encuentra actualmente bajo amenaza de pérdida y puede venderse y demolerse para otro uso. En una oportunidad impresionante para las artes locales, creemos que se debe preservar y darle una nueva vida como sede permanente del establecido THALIA SPANISH THEATRE, que ha brindado excelencia durante 47 años. Thalía ha sido una parte integral de nuestra comunidad desde 1977, ofreciendo espectáculos de alta calidad y promoviendo la cultura latina (Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York).
Thalía ha producido eventos reconocidos internacionalmente en una caja de zapatos virtual, y este traslado a tan solo cuatro cuadras en Greenpoint Avenue les brindaría más espacio para sus propias producciones y también para otros grupos culturales locales. No habría necesidad de montar un nueva organización no lucrativa 501-c-3 sin haber sido probada, ya que el Thalia ha demostrado su valía, dedicación, excelencia y servicio al público en 47 años. Han presentado 253 producciones de artes escénicas y obtenido más de 250 premios locales, nacionales e internacionales a la excelencia artística. Ya han demostrado ser confiables con subvenciones y fundaciones privadas locales, estatales y nacionales.
Al mudarse al BLISS THEATRE, con su increíble espacio, podrían continuar con su valioso trabajo y al mismo tiempo comprometerse a preservar una parte importante de nuestra historia local. Ya ofrecen producciones bilingües (inglés y español), preservan los clásicos y el folclore en decadencia, danza, poesía, música, obras de teatro de vanguardia, eventos gratuitos al aire libre para niños, festivales de cine e instrucción de nivel profesional. Es hora de que demos más que palabras para afuera a los hispanohablantes de 21 países que viven aquí y contribuyen a las artes y la economía.Esta medida no sólo beneficiaría a las artes y la cultura, sino que también impulsaría la economía local al atraer más visitantes a Queens (Americans for the Arts). Le instamos a apoyar esta iniciativa que combina la preservación arquitectónica con el enriquecimiento cultural. Los huéspedes suelen venir de toda el área de los tres estados y de ambos aeropuertos a los espectáculos de Thalia y cenan en la zona. ¡Thalia es el único teatro bilingüe hispano/latino en Queens, Nueva York!
