Little is said about 10 women artists from Spain’s “Generation of 1927,” also known as The Hatless, and this May we are going to help rectify that historical aberration. Worth admiring is the courage of these women who participated in the momentous movement that uprooted Spanish culture during the years of the Second Republic.
They were painters, poets, writers, artists, illustrators, sculptors, philosophers, students at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, at the same time as Salvador Dalí, Federico García Lorca, among many other artists influenced by surrealism, symbolism, futurism and other artistic and literary movement. The artistic output of these women had nothing to envy that of the men.
As a form of protest against a repressive society, they went out with their heads uncovered, being subjected to attacks in the streets. That’s where the moniker “Las SinSombrero” comes from. Some of their names are: Josefina de la Torre, Concha Mendez, Marga Gil Roesset, Ángeles Santos, Maruja Mallo, Maria Zambrano, Rosa Chacel, Ernestina de Champourcin, Maria Teresa Leon, Margarita Manso.
Through our fantastic Flamenco show “Las SinSombrero,” which runs for 3 weeks this May, we’ll honor the work of these “hatless women”, as we hope to help maintain their memories alive.
Poco se dice sobre 10 mujeres artistas de la Generación del 27, también conocidas como “las SinSombrero”, y este mes de Mayo vamos a ayudar a rectificar esta aberración histórica. Es de admirarse el valor de estas mujeres que participaron en el movimiento artístico y literario que puso patas arriba la cultura española durante los años de la Segunda República.
Fueron pintoras, poetas, escritoras, artistas, ilustradoras, escultoras, filósofas — estudiantes de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, en Madrid, al mismo tiempo que Salvador Dalí y Federico García Lorca, entre muchos artistas influenciados por el surrealismo, el simbolismo, el futurismo y otros movimientos artísticos y literarios. La calidad artística de estas mujeres nada tuvo que envidiar a la de los hombres.
Ellas como forma de protesta contra una sociedad represiva, salían con la cabeza descubierta, siendo sometidas a insultos y otras agresiones por las calles. De ahí el apodo “Las SinSombrero”. Algunos de sus nombres son: Josefina de la Torre, Concha Méndez, Marga Gil Roesset, Ángeles Santos, Maruja Mallo, María Zambrano, Rosa Chacel, Ernestina de Champourcin, María Teresa León, Margarita Manso. Mediante nuestro espectáculo Flamenco honramos la labor de “Las SinSombrero” con la esperanza de ayudar a mantener vivas las llamas de sus memorias.
