Federico García Lorca, one of the foremost poets of the Spanish language, was also a committed thespian. He saw the Theatre as key element for a society’s progress and well-being. Here’s one of my favorite quotes, “A nation that does not support and encourage its theatre is — if not dead — dying; just as a theatre that does not capture with laughter and tears the social and historical pulse, the drama of its people, the genuine colour of the spiritual and natural landscape, has no right to call itself a theatre, but only a place for amusement.”
Federico García Lorca, gigante de la poesía de nuestra lengua, fue también un dramaturgo comprometido. Veía en el teatro un element clave para el creicimiento y el bienestar de una sociedad. He aquí una de mis citas favoritas. Un pueblo que no ayuda y no fomenta su teatro, si no está muerto, está moribundo; como el teatro que no recoge el latido social, el latido, histórico, el drama de sus gentes y el color genuino de su paisaje y de su espíritu, con risa o con lágrimas, no tiene derecho a llamarse teatro, sino sala de juego o sitio para hacer esa horrible cosa que se llama “matar el tiempo”.
