It was indeed a humbling and at the same time very motivating experience to receive the Gold Medal, awarded by Spain’s Academy of Performing Arts to the Alliance of Latino Theaters of New York.
Latino Theatre is currently a major contributor to Culture in a metropolis that’s increasingly diverse.
A bit of history: In 1916, “At the Amsterdam Theater in New York City, Manuel Noriega begins performing on stage with singer María Conesa. A tireless impresario, Noriega will form his own theater company, the Compañía Dramática Española which performs stage productions at the Leslie Theater and later the Amsterdam Opera House. At the time, about 14,000 or 0.3% of the City’s population was considered Hispanic (source: www1.nyc.gov). Hispanics now make up 28.3% of the population, narrowing the gap with whites, who are the largest group at 30.9% (source: ny1.com)

The 9 groups that form the Alliance have consistently produced top-quality productions, in English, Spanish, Bilingual. Some of the world’s leading actors/directors/playwrights have premiered in NYC . Many international Latinos plays have had their world premiere here.
Below are the 9 groups (8 venues) that form the Alliance and were rewarded with Spain’s Academy of Performing Arts. Together, over the 100+ years since Mr. Noriega’s play, they have staged over 500 major productions.

Ha sido indudablemente un gran honor y a la vez un corrientazo de energía haber recibido en persona la Medalla de Oro que otorga la Academia de las Artes Escénicas de España a la Alliance of Latino Theatres in New York.
El Teatro Latino es actualmente uno de los más importantes contribuyentes a la cultura de una metrópolis cada día más diversa.

Algunos de los principales actores, directores y dramaturgos del mundo se han estrenado en Nueva York. Muchas obras de teatro latino internacionales han tenido su estreno mundial aquí.
